In Support Of The M6 Survival Rifle

M6 Survival RifleM6 Survival Rifle

A Springfield Armory M6 Survival Rifle was the first firearm we owned, so we are likely biased. A recent post (with excellent photography) from Oleg Volk seemed to misunderstand the M6, which is certainly no defensive weapon. But as a survival rifle, it is potentially without equal. We prefer the chambering with .410 over .22 Hornet and while Oleg calls the sights “primitive” we are able to hit 3″ targets every time from 50 yards or more. This seems more than adequate for almost every hunting scenario. And the .410 provides a round for bird hunting, snake protection and other valuable tasks. Our only CON of the M6 is the cost of buying a quality used which can easily be $500 or more ($2,000 is crazy!).

SHTF Vehicles by Eric Peters

Well-written article by Eric Peters on choices for SHTF Vehicles:

WTSHTF News Excerpt:

In my last column I wrote about buying land as a hedge against both currency collapse and the very real possibility of roaming mobs of violent thugs in a SHTF scenario. Several readers brought up the issue of transportation. What kind of vehicle would be good to have in bad times? Here are some thoughts on that.

Nature Made Iron 65mg – 300 Tablets

65mg Iron Tablets65mg Iron Tablets

In a SHTF scenario, iron deficiency could be a real problem, especially if sources of animal protein become scarce for different reasons. Having a supply of iron tablets just makes sense! This recent discussion on SHTFM.com sheds more light on the issue. We recommend storing such iron tablets with other food and vitamin preparations as well as including some in your Bug-Out-Bag‘s medical kit.

Qiviut Socks

Qiviut SocksQiviut Socks

After learning about Qiviut Socks via a post on SurvivalBlog.com, one of their readers tracked down a source in Canada. So we just ordered two pair and will report back on our findings asap. These are apparently the warmest thing you can wear on your feet short of an actual animal. And it’s pretty cool how Muskox rubs off their down to be hand-collected and hand-spun into yarn.

From Spruce Have Farm:

Qiviut – the supersoft down of the Muskox – softer than cashmere, and 8 times warmer than wool. The muskox seasonally rub off their down on brush, where it is collected by hand and spun into exotic yarns. In this case the qiviut is blended into a sockyarn with fine Merino wool (for memory) and nylon (for strength) and knit by the Soxophone Player. The heels and toes in this pair are reinforced.

This is basically a permanent marker but built like a tank. It’s made from high impact plastic and features walls that are 4 times thicker than similar markers along with a screw-on cap. This means it’s built for impact and, in a self-defense emergency it can become an efficient Yawara stick for driving off an attacker. It’s the biggest, baddest, permanent marker around!
